This volume contains some contributed papers which have been accepted by the Editorial Board of the BIOMAT Consortium for the BIOMAT 2006 Symposium – International Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Biology which was held in the city of Manaus, in the Brazilian Equatorial Rain Forest from 25th November to 01st December 2006. Allthe papers have been submitted to a double blind system of analysis and we thank all the referees for the level of excellence of their collaborations with the tasks and duties of the BIOMAT Consortium.

As a rule, the interdisciplinary approach and the level of the works of the oral and poster sessions had a deep impact on the training of future researchers. The structure of the conference with the tutorials sessions on Saturday and Sunday lectured by experts is aimed to motivate the creative professional work on interdisciplinary topics of mathematicdal modelling of biosystems.

We thank the Board of Trustees of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel – CAPES as well as from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq. We have also received support from Petrobras, the Brazilian Oil company and the world leader of oil research on deep sea waters and the Cenpes – Petrobras Research Centre. We also thank the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Trade zone – Suframa and the Uninorte University Centre of Manaus. The excursion to Inpa "Science Park" was an important part of the Biomat 2006 Social Program and we thank Inpa administration for the invitation.

Special thanks are due to the directors and representatives of the institutions named above: Prof. José Fernandes de Lima from CAPES, Dr. Ma. de Lourdes Queirós from CNPq, Dr. Gina Vasquez from Petrobras – Cenpes, Dr. Auxiliadora Tupinambá from Suframa and Dr. Wanderli Tadei from Inpa. We are also indebted to the representatives of the host institutions of the Biomat 2006 Symposium at Manaus: Prof. Ma. Hercília Tribuzzy, Dr. Isa Leal and Dr. Tania Castelo Branco, from Uninorte University Centre. Dr. III Andrea Waichman, Dr. Marta Gusmão and Dr. José Pedro Cordeiro from Ufam – Federal University of Amazonas. On behalf of the Editorial Board of the Biomat Consortium, we thank all the authors, participants and sponsors of the Biomat 2006 Symposium for their continuous support to the scientific activities and administrative tasks of this successful series of conferences.
